Granite Bay = Race # 1

By | February 25th, 2012|

For those driving up on their own feel free to meet at Gus Gym at 6am if you’d like to caravan along with the group. We’ll roll promptly so please be on time. Please expect the drive to take between an hour thirty five minutes to two hours depending on traffic (hopefully very light) and any construction that is going on.

I’d like everyone at the event parking lot by 8:00am. Remember, this is race number one so it also involves checking in and getting number plates. We also need to get the team camp set up…everyone chips in a little to expedite the process. Lots of things need to happen very early and very quickly.
The last chance to embark on a pre-ride of the course (critical!!) is roughly 8:30 to 9ish to complete the course.
Click on the RACE CHECKLIST!! to make sure you have everything you need! The list is comprehensive and detailed. A few parents do have toolkits they’ll bring but don’t rely on them and don’t let something as simple as a flat tire spoil your race. No tube and you’re gonna have a long race!
Check the blog again later today….I may have more updates. If you have any questions please get in touch with me. We’re gonna do great and have an incredible day!

Tam High Sponsorship Challenge

By | February 15th, 2012|

Jeff out on a ride with Coach Paul
Jeff Jungsten, a talented cyclist, co-owner of Caletti/Jungsten Construction and one of most sincere and nicest people you’d ever have the privilege of knowing, posed a challenge to me last year at the conclusion of the season.

“Have 5 girls race and I’ll DOUBLE my sponsorship commitment to the team next year.”

Jeff and I share the same mindset when it comes to cycling. Get kids started young and you’ll set them up for a lifestyle of good health, outdoor exploration and active exercise.

That challenge added tinder to a small fire your coach had at the start of last season, which was to have a full girls squad. Seeing other teams at races fielding full girls squads left me scratching my head and wondering why Tam couldn’t do the same. Well…I knew we could.

Late last year I began thinking about putting the proper infrastructure in place to start the squad. I knew we needed a talented woman leading the charge. After gathering the board and going over prospects we had the good fortune of landing Christy Allen. As an all around athlete that embodies a healthy approach to life….and a very talented cyclist at that, we had what we needed to get things started. It was a perfect match and we couldn’t be luckier.

I’m pleased to announce that thanks to the tireless hard work and organized approach of Coach Christy and the girls squad we have met that challenge. We’ve already won….before our first race. Congratulations!

I would also like to thank Jeff for his continued support and enthusiasm for our team. Cycling has a unique business model in the world of sports. With no gate fees it is almost totally reliant on sponsorships such as Jeff and our other supporters. At the high school and other entry level venues sponsors are so crucial it is often the deciding factor on whether or not a team or club will survive. The next time Jeff can join us for a ride please be sure to introduce yourself and give him a big thanks.

Here’s to a great season. GO TAM!

Mandatory Rider Clinic Sunday

By | February 11th, 2012|

Hello Team-

Co-Captains Bob and Spence are leading a team clinic this Sunday. We’ll meet at the Depot at 9:00am sharp and head over to Tennessee Valley.

Aside from dueling wheelie competitions and bad jokes Bob and Spence are tenured riders with years of racing and riding experience. They have come up with a great agenda that will provide everyone with useful information and “insider knowledge”. The clinic will cover a broad array of topics from fixing a flat to cycling nutrition to pack riding skills and everything in between. Reading about these things in a book is one thing but practical hands on experience provides so much more.

This will be a rolling clinic! You get enough of the classroom chalkboard stuff during the week so be prepared to ride as well as gathering as a group around your captains.
